The division 7 final started promptly at midday on Sunday 13th June away at Oxford. The Middlesex team had arrived in good time so were able to have a quick hit on the court before starting. It was agreed to play 3,2,1 so Shovan Tamjidi was on first.
Shovan started well but his opponent (Ed Wigzell) gained some early momentum to realise a 5-3 lead. Shovan changed his serve, dug deep and pulled it back to 5-5 before a very close final game to take the set 6-5. At this point Shovan relaxed just a bit and Ed seized his chance to take the second set in runaway fashion 6-0. Fully refreshed (!) Shovan was determined to get the 3rd set off to a good start, taking first blood and then, through sheer determination, managed to scale the final set 6-3.
Second up was Chris Lindsey playing a youthful Tom Monk. Eager to impress his private army of cheerleaders (wife, 2 daughters and neighbour), Chris stole the first set 6-5 and then promptly lost the second by a resounding 2-6 before he could finish breathing a sigh of relief. Devastated by the prospect of ignominious defeat, Chris then discarded all concept of grace or elegance and raced around the court as fast as possible swatting at balls with abandon to achieve an unexpected but satisfying victory 6-3.
This meant that Ollie Weston (our resident Division 7 team saxophonist) had the tough challenge of going for the whitewash against a sometimes distracted but startlingly hard hitting Richard Oliver. After a runaway start from Ollie, Richard gained some real momentum to set up another thrilling 5-5 showdown for the first. But Ollie showed his mettle and came up trumps to quash the budding shards of hope that were forming in Richards mind. Buoyed by that success, Ollie then took full command of the match to take the second set 6-2 and seal a glorious 3-0 victory for Middlesex.
Well done to all.
